For more than 4 decades TOTAL has been the Operator for Mahakam
Block in East Kalimantan. Not only growth and success have been shared
with its partners, but also together, they have written a major part in
energy history of Indonesia.
The first oil from the Mahakam Block was produced in 1974 from the Bekapai field, and was soon followed by production from the Handil field, Oil production peaked in 1977 at 230,000 bbls per day. Gas production began with large reserves found in Tambora (1974), Tunu (1977), Peciko (1983), Sisi (1986), Nubi (1992), and South Mahakam field (Stupa 1996 and Mandu 2007). Since 2000, TOTAL in Indonesia has become Indonesia’s largest gas producer and in 2005 the plateau of 2.6 MMscf per day was achieved. In addition to the Mahakam Block, TOTAL is also the Operator of the South East Mahakam and the Tengah blocks and has some interest in the Nilam and Badak units.
In 2010, TOTAL increased its assets portfolio in Indonesia by acquiring a 15% interest in Sebuku PSC and a 24.5% interest in two exploration blocks in the Arafura Sea (the Amborip VI and the Arafura Sea blocks). The following year, TOTAL was awarded the Kutai Timur CBM block (50% interest) and the South West Bird’s Head exploration block (100% interest). TOTAL also acquired interests in the Sageri, South Sageri, Sadang and South Mandar deep-offshore exploration blocks.
In 2012, TOTAL was awarded the Telen block (100% interest) and the Mentawai block (100% interest). Mahakam PSC produced 1.786 Bcfd of gas and 67,000 barrels per day of oil and condensates in 2012.
On 27 October 2013, natural gas production commenced from Ruby gas field in Sebuku PSC. In the same year, TOTAL drilled Tongkol South-1x exploration well in South East Mahakam PSC and Anggrek Hitam-1x exploration well in Southwest Bird’s Head PSC. Furthermore, TOTAL plans to drill Rendang-1x exploration well in Bengkulu I – Mentawai PSC in 2014.
At the same time, TOTAL maintains its strong activities in Mahakam. It exerts continuous efforts to improve the recovery factor of the fields, to the limit the production decline of mature fields, to develop more remote and marginal fields and to streamline the operations under a pro-active and dynamic policy.
